    I have a G9 and the 100-400, but I really think I'll replace the lens with the 50-200 and the 2x teleconverter. I've been shooting recently at f/8 just to make sure I can handle losing 2/3 stops of light, and in most cases it's not an issue. In addition, there are MANY times when I wish my 100-400 wasn't quite so long, for instance when I'm shooting kids sports games or shooting either large animals or those which I can get close to. Being able to use the 50-200 alone and get the extra light in those situations would be great.

    No 3.5mm mic input is a bit bummer. As well no usb-c power camera.... Overall not bad, but accumulating that little things here and there as a whole make it a bit questionable. And that's dumb because with little touch it could be really great camera, instead of "good". Doing "saving every cent" on little features will lead that it will be not that popular as supposed to be...

    Just ordered a Sony RX10 MK IV. Does feel like the brands have sorta given up on this segment of the market of little pocket rocket all-in-1 bridgecameras/superzooms. Even this or the new Leica compact feel like they're just going though the parts bin and slapping something together, but it's hardly convincing to meet 2024 expectations. The RX10 MK IV feels like the last and very best of it's kind. People say to buy it now while you still can. And so I did. I have fond memories of my Canon SX1 IS and Panasonic FZ1000. Went M43 for a few years, but old tech of ILCs and more modern and capable smartphones like Xiaomi x Leica and Vivo x Zeiss has kind of made it a chore to carry equipment around. The latest generation of Panasonic cameras has certainly made it more interesting again, but I'm curious to see if my money is better spent on this ancient legend by Sony, especially with a safari honeymoon coming up.

  • @malfunkt

    I've owned FZ200/300/1000 - all excellent. I know the FZ80 was sometimes criticized as not being as good as these models, mainly for being a bit blurry on its longest focal length, in part due to its image stabilization. I wonder if this has been improved in this model. I recently had a chance to revisit the FZ300, and use it alongside an APS-C Fuji setup X-T2 with a Tamron 18-300 (approx 28mm-450mm in 35mm equivalent). The FZ300 actually faired quite well in the right lighting, showing very good detail. The smaller sensors always lose out on color and dynamic range though, and that lends to a certain look that can appear washed out or blown out. Colors are not as vibrant either. In the bridge class, perhaps the best all-rounder are the 1" sensors. The FZ1000 (both I and II models) are incredible cameras, fast focusing with high-resolutions files with a good degree of dynamic range. IQ on these isn't too far behind some of Panasonic's micro-four thirds sensors from the mid-2010s - which is still very good. Bridge cameras continue to fetch high prices on the used markets, including even the old FZ200. Sony's last high-end bridge camera the RX10 IV still holds its value and quality, but I don't think we will see a new model from them. Leica has recently come out with the D-Lux 8, arguably a Lumix LX100 II with a few additions and quality-of-life upgrades. While it would be nice to see some sensor improvements on these types of cameras, I think we can now say that the biggest improvements to image quality are going to come from post-processing in terms of AI / neural net algorithms. Lightroom denoise and Topaz, are just scratching the surface. Soon you will be able to take quite noisy and blurry images and have them reconstructed with any type of lighting, detail, weather condition, lens type etc. Depends on how you want to create. For purists who want the best image quality straight-out-of-camera, they aren't going to be looking at these type of cameras anyways. My main reason for no longer owning a bridge camera are the flexibility/control an interchangeable lens body allows, better image quality, but also the availability of lenses like the Tamron 18-300. Not only can the Tamron 18-300 exceed the focal range of the FZ1000 but it will even match the range of the FZ300/330 once the overall pixel size of the image is factored in. Importantly, a lens like the 18-300 is a manual zoom rather than zoom-by-wire (common on most bridge cameras) so I find this much better suited for faster subject acquisition. The new Zoom acquisition on the FZ80D is a nice touch though, If I did own a bridge camera now, it would probably be a Sony RX10 IV or the Nikon P950, but the FZ80D deserves a look especially with these quality of life updates and given the continual improvements in post-processing technology.

    I had a Canon 560HS with basically similar specs, same sensor size, 21-1360mm optical zoom. I decided to go for an M50m2 for these reasons: The small sensor. Aperture range at tele was 1 stop, at wide 2.5 stops, not good enough. I hated the motorized zoom, always over or under shooting. Then it had no touch screen but that i.s resolved with most of the new cameras. Basically I wanted a greater range of options and better image quality. IMO lenses over 400mm are for special cases and are difficult when used hand held both in terms of camera shake and following moving objects.

      hi there, sorry it's a bit hard for me to comment as it depends on a lot of things like what is the other camera you use, how you shoot with this camera..etc. I think the FZ80D can capture great quality video during the day, apart from the jitters i mentioned in the review. I don't have much experience with the SX70 myself but the P950 is a nice camera and provides longer reach. But downside with the P950 is that it's a more expensive and bigger camera so there is a tradeoff. Note while i have done a review of the P950 that was many years ago and i haven't compare the footage of the P950 with this camera side by side

    I'm rather confused about why Panasonic even bothered with this release. This follows the same theme as the G100D, a similar rehash of a camera with only a new EVF and USB-C port. Still, these cameras are better to have as options rather than nothing at all.

      I believe Panasonic has to replace some components to continue manufacturing, so they use the opportunity to update it with new EVF, new LCD, USB-C port and add the new zoom compose assist. So I think of it as a facelift model that car manufacturers usually do to their cars

    Great review. One of my favourite film cameras was a Chinon bridge camera back in the late 80s. I loved that camera (apart from the expensive batteries) because it let me take good photos in a fun way and had a zoom built-in. The same with digital cameras - the superzoom bridge cameras are just what some people need. They are fun, good in general situations, no issues with changing lenses, and can take some good photos, in much the same way as the Lumix LX and TZ cameras did. Nice to see an updated version. (Also, they seem to retain some resale value from looking around the place).

    Richard, are you able to check the sync speed for flash? Bridge camera tends to have leaf shutter, so even in low light situation or high dynamic range situation, we still can use flash

      I just tried it with my Godox flash and disabled the high speed sync. Firing at 1/2000s shutter speed (fastest mechanical shutter speed) and flash seems working fine

    good review. It's nice to see panasonic keeping this line alive. I hope they add more computational photography features like high resolution mode or HDR RAW through multishot, or even Dynamic Range boost like g9ii. There's definitely a market for high end small sensor camera when you need a lot of Depth of Field (think product photography)

      not sure about preMF setting. But it has a macro and normal AF setting, the normal AF setting is kind like focus range limiter as it stops the camera from focusing very close.

      And the P1000 is awesome too! Crazy 125x zoom! But then both P950 and P1000 are a lot more expensive, bigger and heavier than the FZ80D. so I guess it depends how large you want your camera to be.

    Hey Richard, i have a question, why some people especially the youtuber and people like to spend money, doesnt just use camera like this or a Panasonic HC-X1500 camcorder when they want to shoot wild animal photo and video, they do it mostly in day time and at most just in evening, the image quality womt be much different, just less overexpore in some area and more contrast, they often do it for fun too, some even just take video of them, hence, why they still choose bigger sensor mirrorless, is it because lf the hype and not much marketing for these kind of bridge camera ans camcorder which make tjem forgotten?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong 17 часов назад

      I can't speak of everyone, but for myself, I need to shoot both photos and cameras with my camera and I shoot at day time, night time. So a large sensor camera would be better choice for me. If I use a camcorder, I would still need to buy/carry a separate photo camera. The mirrorless camera is usually where you find the latest technology first. like the latest image stabilisation system.

      @@TheRealRichardWong yeah, I learned it's about compromise or else everyone will just get a medium format camera, higher size better image quality but less things you can do or go smaller with lower quality but more things you can do or you go for the middle, but I think even if you get a mirrorless you still need to change lens, this is my still planning setup, which one do you think make more sense?: 1) Xperia 1 VI (for 2X macro, 16,24,48,85-170) with Zf 28-400mm f4-8 2) Xperia 1 VI with Zf with a prime with HC-X1500 25-600mm 3) Xperia 1 VI + Hasselblads with a 25mm (20mm FF eq, plan to use it with crop 2X to 50mm), Zf with 70-180mm / 28-400mm and HC-X1500 I like to shoot artistic photo for fun, contest and gig if I get to land on any, I like video and dreamed to get a camcorder since teen age but they don't have much new release now, also I learned that you can have one that do a lot but might have compromise and you will need to good at shifting your mind for different task while using the same thing or else you will be like get off work but still in work place and mind kind of feel, but more things mean you need to take care more things

    I have the Sony Equivalent to this camera and I also have the original Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FZ1000. So I don't get anyone's excitement about Panasonic bringing back the even smaller sensor Camera. It's going to cost about $480. I would not advise any newcomer to go back in time to those Tiny Sensor Cameras. Nothing less then 1 inch sensors cameras is Bare Bones these days. So I would rather see Panasonic focus far more on version 3 of the FZ1000. That and the LX100M, also version 3. I can't believe there is STRONG demand again for Tiny Sensor Cameras when folks already have their so called Smart Phones.

    • @TheRealRichardWong

      Different cameras for different users. For a lot of people, camera like this FZ80D provides similar or even better image quality than their phones (not everyone have latest iPhone) and allow them to zoom all the way to 1200mm focal length that phones can't do.

    • @natureredux1957
      @natureredux1957 15 часов назад

      @@TheRealRichardWong I am quite aware of the different camera for different users. I am also quite aware that most buyers of this Camera will be ignorant to the fact of how low quality the images will be coming out of this camera. Let me repeat, I still have the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V Digital Camera with the 20.4MP 1/2.3" Exmor R CMOS Sensor with the 24-1200mm Equiv. Focal Length. Zooming out to 1200 is meaningless if the quality ends up being very poor. And I assure that is mostly what most folks will be getting. Most would be far better off buying used MFTs gear. Which by way, you know Panasonic also makes.

    Hey Rich thanks nicely done. With this FZ80D it looks like Panasonic has gone back to the drawing board with its line of point-and-shoot bridge cameras, considering this new camera closely resembles its FZ82. I wonder if we'll continue to see a renewed release of this line, and I have high anticipation if we'll see an updated FZ2000/2500, Panasonic's most premium bridge camera engineered with a large 1" inch sensor. Coupled with higher f-stops for stabilization, If then I wonder will Panasonic offer faster internal media, by way of a CF Express B card found on its mirrorless camera lineup? This would help to ensure the most significant amount of information captured by such an all-around stills/video solution? More than the body info, it would also be keen to know the actual lens info you're using when recording these episodes, as well? Cheers!

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong 22 часа назад

      Hi David, yes it maybe a sign that Panasonic is going to re-new their compact camera lineup. Not sure about CFExpress B card, as even their full frame cameras line S5II/S5IIx doesn't use it. Usually companies only use CFE card unless they need really high data rate otherwise they would like to stick with SD card because the price of the card and the extra heat generated by the CFE card which requires extra thermal management. But yes will be interesting to see what Pannasonic may do next! Re the lenses, for the outdoor intro, I use the Lumix S 20-60 with the S5II, and some of the first person view video were shot with the Insta360 Go3. For the studio video, I pretty much always use the Lumix S 24 1.8

    • @DavidMartinGraff
      @DavidMartinGraff 20 часов назад

      I know what you mean, the camera's hardware, for CF Express, require more hardware, it's more labor intensive the manufacturing process that comes with more compromises, for example image quality? The higher cost makes it more difficult to pass onto the customer? Only the Panasonic GH6 & S1, not the S1H, come equipped with CF Express. GH5/S/M2 use UHS II, more costly and less speed transfer. I think Panasonic hit the GH7 out of the park, it may be a worthy upgrade, but from what I've seen, kind of like my GH6 image quality, and I'm honestly not sure if the PDAF improvement for GH7 may come at a cost of sacrificing image quality for the autofocus improvement prowess?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong 18 часов назад

      @@DavidMartinGraff The S1H sucessor will surely comes with CFExpress card, (whenever it arrive, but I don't feel it's coming very soon) as it is needed for the ProRes or ProResRAW recording which we can be sure the S1H successor will have. Re PDAF, while there MAYBE some scarfice in image quality, if you uses autofocus for video, I feel the improvement in autofocus far exceed any penalty in image quality.

    • @DavidMartinGraff
      @DavidMartinGraff 12 часов назад

      ChatGPT I don't prioritize autofocus highly because it's not a panacea; it's simply another tool for filmmakers to consider. Consumer autofocus systems, across various brands, haven't yet achieved consistently professional results. I also value autofocus combined with stabilization, which can deliver a professional look-similar to how DJI camera drones operate effectively. While I own multiple camera bodies, I await the next evolution in autofocus and stabilization technology from Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony. There's still significant development needed in this area. Looking ahead, it's uncertain whether advancements will eliminate the need for skilled camerapersons, but the potential for convergence in photography and videography is intriguing.
